Barrier posts for effective guidance of pedestrian and vehicle traffic

When it comes to simple but effective ways of ensuring road safety in towns and cities or demarcating a traffic-calmed area, bollards are a versatile, reliable and easy-to-realise solution. The bollards fulfill numerous important tasks in road traffic and help to make traffic safer.

Bollards in road traffic – the versatile solution for greater safety

Versatile: many tasks for bollards in road traffic

How bollards contribute to greater road safety in towns and cities

Safe coexistence of the many different road users on the roads also requires appropriate measures with regard to the design of the traffic infrastructure: to enforce traffic rules, to minimise potential hazards and to better manage traffic flows.

Local authorities often use bollards and barrier posts for these tasks because they can be installed in almost any environment and used for various purposes:

  • Bollards mark different areas in road traffic, serve as physical barriers and thus mark the respective zones for the respective road users. In this way, they regulate the flow of traffic, among other things.
  • Thanks to their barrier function, bollards also protect pedestrians from unauthorised access to pedestrian areas (e.g. pavements or traffic-calmed areas).

  • Bollards can also be used as so-called modal filters for traffic calming. The bollards help to „filter out“ undesirable types of traffic in sensitive areas and thus contribute to calming traffic. This means that the bollards can only be passed by pedestrians, for example, while other types of traffic are excluded.
  • Bollards are also suitable as clearly visible indication of danger spots. These can be, for example, road junctions with an increased risk of accidents or temporary hazards due to roadworks.

Whether as barrier posts for car parks or as bollards along the road, whether as protection for driveways or as barrier bollards at dangerous crossing points: bollards are an indispensable aid for cities and municipalities to improve road safety, especially in busy urban environments with high traffic volumes. They also have positive side effects such as more efficient traffic flow management to prevent traffic jams. This makes street bollards an extremely versatile tool for urban and traffic planning.

Multi- variant: bollards and their different properties

Wide rang of bollards for miscellaneous tasks in road traffic

The requirements for bollards vary greatly depending on the area of application. To meet these requirements, cities and municipalities can choose from a wide range of bollards. The required properties vary, for example, depending on the location, surface and visibility expectations.

Location as a factor

The location determines the desirable features that a bollard should have, as there are significant differences in the probability of impact situations. At particularly vulnerable locations, the bollards should therefore not only be made of the most robust material possible. With the smart 3p-Technology, local authorities can reduce their repair, installation and storage costs. The system with replaceable junction piece does not have any disadvantages in terms of stability and safety.

Subfloor as a factor

Depending on the subflorr, some types of fastening are better suited to ensure the stability of the bollards. The ABES bollard range therefore offers a number of options for fixing the bollards.

The options range from a fixed installation (fixed installation for bollards to be set in concrete) to variants of bollards with ground sockets and solutions for screwing the bollards on at ground level or underground. Many mounting types also allow a greater degree of flexibility: some bollards are removable, while other bollards can be folded down.

Visibility as a factor

In many cases, street bollards should be easily recognisable but still blend unobtrusively into the cityscape. However, visibility is particularly important at danger spots. ABES therefore offers a selection of different RAL colours to make the bollards even easier to recognise. It is also possible to fit them with reflective film to increase the bollards’ contribution to road safety.
